This is a hard one because I don't think I can pinpoint exactly what my earliest memory is but there are a few that really stick out.
I remember tearing up a paper towel into a thousand little pieces on the living room carpet when I was frustrated about something. I think I did that more than once. I used the old Pamper boxes as a barbie house for my barbie dolls. I remember the old musty smell of the root cellar. It smelled of spiders and dark and I was scared to go down there. I remember sliding down the stairs on a mattress. That was soooo fun! I remember the way those huge black and yellow spiders on the really big spider webs made huge scary spidery shadows and putting bugs in the webs so I could watch the spider kill it.
I remember running in the sprinkler and a huge rat running across my feet and into the bushes. Seriously, it was the size of a puppy! I remember picking Joseph up out of his bassinet and holding him above the couch and letting go to watch him bounce on the cushions. I thought that was hilarious and couldn't figure out why mom was mad at me. We were having such a good time.
I also remember putting mom's nylons on over my roller skates and trying to roll around in the kitchen. I also remember getting spanked for doing that. I remember we would always try to make the stray animals our pets but mom was allergic. One time we found some kittens and tried to give them a bath and I got all scratched up in the process. Then mom made me take them back outside and leave them.I remember feeling safe and loved even though our house was burglarized a couple times while we were all asleep. It seems like a dream recalling these memories, like a life that once was but is gone from me now. I miss parts of it because we really did have a great childhood. I hope my kids are having a great one too. I hope when they're older, they can look back on their lives and remember the good times and the fun.
